SAMATThe historic cross of Mt. Samat in Bataan is a popular destination during the Holy Week. The spiritual theme combined with that patriotic ambiance is a perfect reflection of the Filipino culture and tradition. The 'Dambana ng Kagitingan' (Shrine of Valor) is on my list of places to visit. I was lucky enough to visit this shrine twice in two months and believe me, wanting to visit this place again will never grow old.

It was a long drive to reach the shrine. The place was secluded that only the sight of the cross from afar was our only guide to how near we were. But you will never get bored traveling since the view of that mountain becomes nearer as the iconic cross looked small at a distance. I can feel the excitement as our ride reached the entrance of the mountain. Driving all the way to the top was like riding a roller coaster. The sharp turns going up the mountain only gets steeper the more we climbed the top.

You can park your car at the main entrance of the Shrine and walk up the remaining steep turns to the top or if you are brave enough, you can drive to the top. But I suggest you walk the last few (I would not say a few since it still is pretty far from the shrine) kilometers going to the top so you can enjoy the view while walking the road. As I climbed that top, the cross gets bigger and the view below gets more amazing.

The view only gets better as you climb higher

But that long climb to the top was worth it when we reached the shrine. The cross stood in the middle of the shrine which towered to the sky. The cross was overwhelming in size. The place was peaceful, clean and serene. The cool mountain air made the place comfortable besides the hot climate. Just the presence of the place brings you back to that time when the Filipino and American soldiers suffered in the hands of the Japanese. It was a marriage of religion and culture. A breath-taking realization as I circled the foot of the cross where images of war heroes encircled the cross; a constant reminder why the shrine was built.
If you think standing at the foot of the cross was an amazing sight, wait until you reach the top of the cross where the viewing decks on both arms were located. An elevator inside the foot of the cross can take you the fastest way to the viewing decks. The small elevator can only accommodate up to 9 people at a time so the queue can be long if you decide to visit on the weekends. That short elevator trip brings you to the viewing decks where a more amazing view awaits you.

The amazing view on top is really worth the long climb. I got to experience the feeling of being on top, with the wind on my face, having a good time with my friends and enjoying the moment that can be only experienced at Mt. Samat. But one thing that I forgot to do during my two visits is to check out the museum. I guess I was too preoccupied to get to the cross that the museum completely left my mind. Oh well, it gives me a reason to go there again. I will be definitely coming back again.

*My traveling tips:
-Entrance to the site upon arrival is 30php per head. I think there is discount on students and senior citizen. The ticket they will be giving is your entrance pass to the musuem.
-You need to pay extra 10php per head if you will be going up the elevator to the viewing decks.
-Bring umbrella if you decide to walk the last turns going up the mountain, especially in the summer.
-The shrine is open until 5pm so go early if you want all the time to enjoy the place.
-Refreshments are sold in stalls near the foot of the cross.
to stop by at Texas Joe’s to satisfy our cravings for American meals. We
go here at least once a month just to eat at Texas Joe’s. It is quickly
becoming a hotspot in Subic since the place is incredible and the food
is really good.

And did I mention that the best ribs in Subic (if not the whole
country) are served at Texas’ Joes? Oh yes, every rib platter served
here is packed with humongous ribs grilled to perfection. It is
flavorful and tender that it falls of the bone. There is an array of
side dishes to choose from the simple mashed potatoes to the savory
baked beans and corn bread. It is literally a hungry man’s feast! Diet
is not an excuse when eating in this place!
The country inspired theme of the restaurant adds an authentic
American Saloon feel to the place. There is a billiards table where you
can play a game while drinking beers with your pals; an awesome bar and a
stage where bands can perform. Even your table can entertain you! Tables are covered with a huge brown sheet of paper and crayons are provided so you can doodle away while waiting for food to be served. The servers are dressed as cowboys and
cowgirls. Texas Joes’ is an all-in dining and entertaining experience.
You have to come there while in Subic.
I'm used to my usual beauty routine of just using my favorite facial scrub, astringent, moisturizer. Sometimes I buy pore strips to remove whiteheads and blackheads around my nose and that's about as far of a facial I have done. My co-workers have been talking about having facials once a month and how nice their skin had become.

Curious, I decided to go for a facial. In the mall, there are a handful of establishments offering facials from simple cleaning to other complicated stuff like wraps and masks. Since it was my first time, I decided to go for the simplest (cleaning only). Apparently, 'Let's Face It' offers the cheapest facial starting at P245.00. It is a reasonable price for someone like me so I decided to go for it.

The good thing I've learned about having a facial (at least for this establishment, that is) is that I don't need to get an appointment to get a facial. I went there after office and saw a few people hoping to get facial too. The session lasts for less than an hour and turn-around time was about 10 minutes before I was called to be serviced.

Despite the crowded look from the outside, the ambiance on the inside was pretty much okay. The set-up was quite constrained, having three beds in a row. These beds looked like the ones found in the dentist's clinic; white and narrow, except that these are flat and don't have arm rests. These have lamps on the sides (kind of like your dentist's chairs).

After laying down on one of the beds, the facial session started. It was a relaxing atmosphere with the soft instrumental at the background, and the dim lights inside. Though it was awkward to be sharing a room with people laying on beds with their faces covered just like corpses, we were all a few feet apart from each other.

The first part of the facial was cleansing my face, probably with this sponge or something soft and foamy. After wiping it off, it was time to steam my face. The hot steam was not so bad at all but my nostrils got a facial too, lol. The painful part of the service was removing my blackheads and whiteheads. I have a pretty high tolerance to pain but my tears pretty much rolled out while the blackheads are extracted, especially around the nose area. It was pretty painful but it was all worth it when the esthetician showed me a tissue almost filled with little piles on white pus she had extracted from my face! no wonder it was the most painful 15 minutes of the facial! It was totally worth the pain! One the nose pricking was done, it was time for the vacuum to do its job. Finally, a good amount of moisturizer was applied and the facial was done.

I was advised to wash my face in the morning. The esthetician also said that I had too many facial warts that needed to be removed. I'll probably take that advise though. I'll probably have my facial warts removed next month. I heard it would be not as painful as I thought it would be.

The overall experience for my first facial was pleasant. I'm definitely hooked to it. I washed my face this morning and noticed that my skin is smoother and has improved its appearance. Though I have a few warts sticking out, atleast my face undergone the general cleaning that it has been longing for in years. Though the esthetician discouraged me to do it every month, I think I will be getting facials quarterly. And I will be coming back to 'Let's Face It' soon to try their other services.
Food. And by Adam Richman's crazy reaction upon tasting this pie, I was curious how good it tasted. I decided to make one for myself and this is how it turned out. It was easy to make! Pretty good and totally addictive!
Though it is famous for its fine sand and crystal clear waters, Boracay offers more than just its amazing beaches, with an array of fun activities to choose from, and who would ever forget about FOOD!

Surprisingly, food in Boracay is pretty affordable. Although a lot of fine dining restaurants surrounded the shore, there are a lot of nice food joints to choose from as you walk inside the D' MALL at station 1. The variety of cuisine will definitely feed every hungry man's appetite, from traditional Filipino cuisine, to Indian, Mexican and American cuisine. You may not notice but common fast food joints found in our own cities are not found anywhere within the 3 Stations of Boracay. No common fast food restaurants like Jollibee, Mc Donald's and KFC, which I think is a good thing. You only get to experience the island once a year (twice or more for others) so it is only fair to eat the flavors that the island has to offer rather than binge at the same fast food joints you can find at home.

Mango shakes are everywhere! Almost every corner there is a mango shake stand which whips up refreshing ice cold shakes. Mangoes in Boracary are surprisingly inexpensive too. I couldn't resist having green mangoes and bagoong (shrimp paste) for snacks. What a heavenly treat!

Did I mention that the seafood is totally inexpensive? Some restaurants have tables outside that showcase a wide variety of seafood that you can buy and have these cooked anyway you want. D' TALIPAPA is a more casual food court style dining joint with different stalls selling the freshest seafood and more at very affordable prices.
Craving for steaks? I ♥ BACKYARD BARBECUE is the place to be! located inside D' MALL, it offers the biggest and baddest tower of onion rings for appetizers!

Food trip in Boracay doesn't end when the sun goes down. In fact, food festivities start at sunset. Different restaurants set up their own food buffet with unlimited iced tea! That's all you can eat dishes including seafood and dessert. With buffet menus lined up on the shores, you will be overwhelmed by the different dishes they have.

When you go to a certain place, there are three things you should look for. The sights, the experience, and the food. And Boracay definitely passes those three criteria, because in Boracay, you will never go hungry!

If you own a piggy bank, or have spare change scattered in your house
or car, then you belong to 85% of the richest people in the world.
Furthermore, if you have a bank account, or have a car or property, then
you belong to 90% of the richest people in the word.

These words were shared by my boss today, while killing time at the
office. After a long hard day of work, we talked about how fortunate we
are, to be staying in an air-conditioned office all day, away from the
prickly summer heat while people outside the streets complain about the
scorching hot climate. Then we began to ponder on how blessed we really
are.

Most of the time, we complain about little things in our lives,
without realizing how fortunate we are than most people. The fact that
we have houses to spend the night with, instead of sleeping on the cold
streets, is already a blessing. We have jobs that we may not like, but
it is better than people who have to collect garbage for a living. We
sometimes don’t like like the food in our tables while others starve to
death. We slouch when we have to do simple chores while others have to
do just about anything to get some cash. We often think that we don’t
have enough money in our wallets while others don’t have money. We
sometimes forget how fortunate we are and we take for granted, all the
things that are around us.

Everyday, people in Africa die of starvation. Beggars can be seen
even in richest countries. You are lucky just to be sitting in front of
the computer and reading this blog. Yet you may complain on how slow the
internet connection maybe while some have never seen a
computer.APPRECIATE RATHER THAN COMPLAIN. Life is a matter of being
thankful for the things you have, and sharing it with others. Remember,
you are richer than you think you are.

Nowadays, you can only find pako in some people's backyards and only selected stalls in the market have these. So I make it a habit to buy a lot whenever I can. I've tried one before and really enjoyed it but the problem with these sandwiches is that you have to eat them immediately or else the tortilla wrap becomes to soggy and the filling swims with the dressing which is not good eats.
As for my own take in these delicious meals on the go, I used Cream Dori fillets and simple vegetables to come with it. It is equally satisfying but a lot healthy!
I've seen these a lot on TV and in print but nothing beats seeing the real thing. Last Good Friday, I was able to go to San Fernando with some friends to witness this morbid Kapampangan tradition.

As early as 8:00 in the morning, people started to flock the San Fernando Cathedral wherein penitents are expected to go there and do their 'panata'. Sure enough, spectators surrounded the masked men who had wounded and bloody backs. It seemed that we came at the right time as the 'magdarame' are about to come to the Cathedral to pray.

'Magdarame'
A group of five men were the first I've seen. Their faces were covered with cloth and crowns made up of leaves and stems secured their covered faces, like mimicking Jesus' crown of thorns. Their lashed backs were completely covered in blood as they walked barefoot inside the cathedral patio. They must have walked quite a distance since their bodies were covered with both blood and sweat. The heat of summer morning would've tempered the concrete streets like hot coals so I could only imagine the difficulty for them to walk under the hot sun. They repeatedly hit their backs with homemade wooden torturing devices designed so they can sway it from side to side and hit their wounds. Every time the wooden fringe end hits their wounded backs, it causes the lashes to bleed more, soaking the wooden ends with blood and then gets sprayed onto the ground as the device swayed from left to right... right to left. If you get too close to them you can get sprayed with their blood.

Once they were at the Church, they each found a spot and silently prayed on their knees. After praying, they laid on the scorching concrete chest down and spread their arms and legs. Their companions then hit their entire bodies with wooden sticks. Then they get up to turn around and lay flat only to be hit again. The site was a feast for photographers and tourists , hopping to take photographs of the flagellants in action. The masked penitents on the other hand, didn't mind the attention as they continued on with their pledge. As soon as they were done with their 'ritual and prayers', they got back to their 'pamalo' and continued with their walk probably to go to the next church.

As the first batch of 'magdarame' exited the cathedral, here comes another group. Some of them didn't shed blood but they carried huge wooden crosses barefooted and dressed in red robes that seemed to re-live Jesus' passion. The morning continued with more groups of 'magdarame' coming to the cathedral to pay homage and pray while getting their backs slashed and bodies hit. As the sun shone hotter and the crowd went bigger, the stench of blood floated in the air. The cathedral grounds were already soaked with blood and the scent of blood was unbearable as the bloody sight.

Follow their Steps
We were lucky enough to follow a group of flagellants from the beginning of their 'panata' as they showed us how they slash their backs using the 'panaba' which is a block of wood with shards of broken glass sharp enough to pierce through the skin and let blood flow. Then they got their 'pamalo' and started hitting their bloods to generate more blood and pain. With all of their faces covered, they lined up and started walking barefoot on the hot ground. The idea was to walk pass every chapel or 'pabasa' site around their village to pray, reflect, and then get their bodies hit. They do this until they reach the city cathedral which is usually the flagellants 'last stop before ending their 'panata'.

As we walked the streets of San Fernando, we came across more flagellants walking in groups. For most locals, it is a normal for them to see these masked men lingering around the place on Good Friday, spraying on blood onto every corner of the street and unintentionally scaring children along the way. To me its like a zombie movie that has come to life. There is not a street corner that we wouldn't pass on without seeing a bloody flagellant.

The Tira Bakal
I thought the 'magdarame' was brutal enough but I was wrong. Expectators back at the cathedral wouldn't leave until they see the 'Tira Bakal'. The brutality of this pledge is more morbid than the usual magdarame. In the Tira Bakal, the masked flagellant gets dressed in a red robe with a crown made up of leaves and stems. He carries a huge, wooden cross and like other 'magdarame' he journeys to the Cathedral. But getting there wouldn't be easy. Men who are dressed as Roman soldiers continue to hit the flagellant with a piece of metal or wood hence the name 'Tira Bakal'. The idea was to recreate Jesus' pain as he carried his cross all the way to Mt. Calvary. The disguised soldiers repeatedly beat the flagellant with their sticks, kicked and pushed him until he stumbles unto the ground. The beating continues all the way to the Cathedral. The Tira Bakal that I've witnessed was not bringing his cross anymore but he was tied on the waist and dragged all the way inside the Cathedral grounds. Maybe he was beaten badly along the way that he couldn't make it to the Cathedral bearing his cross.

As the sun shone higher and afternoon progressed, we headed back home. The scorching sun was too hot to bear that we gave up going to Cutud to witness the crucifixion. But seeing these dedicated 'magdarame' was enough to complete my Good Friday. Some people may negate their pledge and the way they hurt themselves to ask for penance or pray, but for these men, it is a way of life... a pledge that they had to to once a year... to remind them to pray, to ask for penance. It takes more than guts and courage to do what they do. It also takes deep faith and dedication to make it through...
But our trip would not be complete without going to our last stop at the Manila Ocean Park to experience the famous fish spa. We could have entered the Oceanarium first but with our already limited budget and time, we decided to skip it and head straight to the third floor where the Fish Spa was.

The open area at the third floor of the park houses the huge rim of the water tank of the Oceanarium and if you're lucky, you get to see some sharks swimming by. There are food stands and kiddie rides too but the most breath-taking part of the top floor was the amazing view of the crystal waters of -----. The fish spa is at the right spot just about the corner overlooking the ocean and some parked ships along the dock.

SHALLOW POOLS HOUSE DOCTOR FISHES WHERE EVERYONE CAN SOAK THEIR FEET
WHILE ENJOYING THE AMAZING VIEW OF THE OCEAN OUTSIDE

With a fee of php 120.00 you can experience 20 minutes with the fish doctors. We went in line along other spa-goers as we waited or turn. The set up includes 2 shallow pools enough to fit around 40 people at the same time. From the low dividers surrounding the spa, we can see people giggling inside the fish spa while their feet are being nibbled by the fish When it was our turn, we were given handy towels and asked for our names so that they can call us when our time was up. After removing our shoes, we looked for a spot to dunk our feet into. As soon as we soaked our feet in the water, the doctors fishes started nibbling our feet away!

For a first-timer like me, it was more than a tingling sensation. I felt more like being tickled so bad that I couldn't stop giggling for the first 5 minutes or so. It was then than I noticed that we chose the pool with bigger doctor fishes in it so of course they nibbled pretty huge! It didn't take time before I got used to my feet getting nibbled so I eventually stopped giggling and just relaxed while chatting and enjoying the view of the ocean. I can also tell that the people sharing the pool with us were enjoying themselves as they also started giggling the moment they soaked their feet in the water. Then all of a sudden, you all burst into laughter with total strangers.

I could sit there for an hour more but of course the fishes would've nibbled my entire feet then haha! I can't wait to go back there!

OMG! Today we will be visiting churches in Bulacan. It was my first time to visit that province so I was more than excited to go there. I was meeting my former professor, his student, and a colleague. There was not much of a plan. We just have to meet early so we can reach our destination and start our pilgrimage early. We did not rent a car to tour us around the towns, instead we decided to use the most popular mode of transportation in the Philippines - jeepneys.

The jeepney ride from San Fernando Pampanga to Bulacan proper lasted almost an hour. Since it was only early, there were only a few of us passengers so we could sit comfortably during the entire ride. The cold breeze of the January air kept blowing on us as we journeyed on the long route to Bulacan. The highway was recently reconstructed so the long commute was not frustrating.

The jeepney stopped at intersection of Bulacan so we took another jeepney ride to the town proper. From there, the travel going to town proper was a little uncomfortable due to the ongoing road constructions, flooded and narrow streets. Traffic was bad when we were almost there so we decided to walk the extra kilometers to the town proper. It was pass 8 in the morning when we reached our destination and masses on both the cathedral and Barasoain have already started so we decided to have our brunch while waiting for the next mass.

Holy Mass at the Cathedral de Malolos.

Sunday masses celebrated in the cathedral are continuous to accommodate the large volume of devotees. Not only were all seats taken, the aisle was filled with standing people eager to hear mass. In fact, the huge structure could not hold enough that a lot of people settled at the side and by the church entrance.

We were lucky to get seats on the front row. My former professor tagged as along the crowded aisle as the priest was giving the final blessing. As soon as the mass ended, we squeezed ourselves in the exiting crowd and were able to sit on the best seats in the cathedral. What a better way to start a day of adventure than hearing mass.

ALTAR OF CATHEDRAL DE MALOLOS

Our Goals.

We would not call it a day of pilgrimage if not for the main objective of our long commute: to visit churches and pray. It is said that you should make a wish every time you visit a church for the first time. My former professor however shared this brilliant idea:

"Have a specific prayer or petition in each Church you visit. So whenever you visit that particular church, you know which prayer to dedicate it for."

He mentioned that one church he dedicated for his father, one for himself , one for his close friends and it goes on and one. So every time he would visit these churches, he knew what to pray for. I think I should start doing it as well.

Praying is my ultimate agenda in visiting churches. Taking pictures is another thing. Equipped with my camera phone (my SLR funds came out short) I took as many prictures as I can. The majestic structures of the churches always leave my breathless. I feel goosebumps everytime I visit a church especially if only few people are around. I want to take my time and explore every inch of these churches and just take photos.

There are a lot of things I notice in every church that I visit: the facade; the bell tower; the main entrance doors; historical description of the church; the altar or shrine; the ceiling; the tombstones cemented on the church walls; the antique accessories; the statues; the list goes on. I can literally feel shivers down my spine and I have to catch my breath in every church visit. I wish I could stay longer but we needed to visit as much as we can in less than a day.

It doesn't always hurt to bring an adult with you. In our case, our former professor, Mr. Polintan, was more than a chaperone to us (lol! just kidding sir). His expertise in history and philosophy fed our minds with historical and religious information. He's the best buddy to bring in every expedition! No kidding! He's like a walking history book with a mix of undefeating humor! He's a chaperone/tourguide/human map/clown! (haha don't kill me sir). Seroiusly, every question we asked during our trip always had an answer. Our ignorance was been fed with detailed explanations. (nosebleed, trully).

We were able to visit 5 churches in less than a day within Bulacan. In between long jeepney rides, long walks and hot climate, were rewarding destinations in every church we stopped by.

Cathedral de Malolos - Malolos, Bulacan

FACADE OF CATHEDRAL DE MALOLOS

It was the busiest church we've visited so we had little time to explore the inside of the cathedral. The tower was under construction and the facade was painted in a modern design. The altar was huge and adorned with flowers.

Barasoain Church - Malolos, Bulacan

FACADE OF BARASOAIN CHURCH

The facade of this church is definitely photogenic. the aged bricks which was built in the 1800's left different shades of gray that leaves an eerie feeling of being transported back to the Spanish era in the country. Its magnificent bell tower stands out on the crowded town of Malolos. The altar was equally magnificent as it was painted in gold and silver. The perfect church for a destination wedding ;).

One of the historical churches in the country, the Barasoain church holds the most important historical event in the Philippines. The Constitution of Malolos was signed here, and the shrine on the walls of the old church seals its authenticity.

THE MALOLOS CONSTITUTION

The convent of Barasoain houses a lavish exhibit of Catholic heritage. Unfortunately, it was closed for the day due to a scheduled program.

Bulacan Church - Bulacan, Bulacan

The church exterior literally left my breathless. It is my favorite facade among the five churches we've visited. Its architecture is impressive and it is uniquely designed. It reminds me of old goth architecture with the gargoyles and demons. ;) You have to see it for yourself. The humble interior and altar shows its simplicity. The orginal 'suelo' or tiles was already covered with new marble flooring but a spot on the entrance was preserved to remember the intricate design of the original tiles.

CHURCH OF BULACAN, BULACAN

Church of Obando - Obando, Bulacan

We call it the pink church because of the pink details on both the exterior and interior of the church. It houses Our Lady of Salambao, the patroness of the town whose image was said to be caught by fisherman with their nets 'salambao', hence the presence of the salambao on the altar. The church also houses Saint Pascual Baylon and Saint Claire of Assisi. These two images are famous for couples who are longing to have a baby. These two images are part of a procession where the locals dance during the fiesta. The so-called fertility dance is being attended by locals and tourists alike.

FACADE OF THE OBANDO CHURCH

Church of Plaridel - Plaridel, Bulacan

The last stop on our journey was the Simbahan ng Plaridel. The simple architecture and interior as well as the serene environment is a nice place to reflect and pray. It's convent however, houses an amazing array of cultural artifacts and religious antiques displayed in an amusement of exhibits.

Final Notes.

There is not much to eat if you are psyched for food trip in Bulacan. Fast foods joints are found in the Malolos town proper, otherwise, small carinderias or food stalls can be located elsewhere in nearby towns. Mineral water from sari-sari stores kept us refreshed in between long walks under the sun. A carinderia just in front or the Plaridel Church offers snacks for a hungry traveler. It also sells these soft, moist, and delicious bibingkas - perfect for pasalubong. Jeepneys going to different towns are easily seen if you are in the town proper if you plan to commute. Do bring an umbrella or wear a hat to protect you from the sun and a handy towel for refreshing yourself. There are public restrooms in both the cathedral and the Plaridel Church in case you have a bathroom emergency.

The Bulacan pilgrimage was a blast. Though my skin was two tones darker, and my energy was already drained at the end of the day, it was all worth it. I've got new photos, newly visited churches, new experience to share, and a whole new perspective. I can't wait for the next adventure!

VIEW THE COMPLETE BULACAN PILGRIMAGE ALBUM at
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1806132601230&set=a.1806115360799.2106717.1477376507&type=3&theater

AYA MINAMINOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05056657604072585219noreply@blogger.com0
